In short

A GST tax invoice must show the supplier's and recipient's names, addresses and GSTINs, a serial number of up to 16 characters unique for the financial year, the date, HSN or SAC codes, descriptions, quantities, taxable values, tax rates and amounts, the place of supply for inter-State supplies, whether reverse charge applies, and a signature (CGST Rule 46). This generator lays all of that out for you.

How it works

Fill in your business, the customer and the items. The generator:

  • reads your state from the first two digits of your GSTIN and checks its format;
  • compares it with the place of supply to charge CGST + SGST (same state) or IGST (different state);
  • works out taxable value (quantity × rate), tax per line and the invoice total;
  • lays out the Rule 46 particulars, including the reverse-charge line and a signature block.

Worked example

Kaveri Agencies, Mysuru (GSTIN 29ABCDE1234F1ZW, made up) bills Shree Lakshmi Hardware, Bengaluru (29PQRST6789K1ZS, made up) on 1 Nov 2026, invoice KA/26-27/0142. Both are in Karnataka, so CGST + SGST.

Item HSN Qty × rate Taxable value GST CGST + SGST
PVC pipe, 1 inch, 6 m 3917 10 × ₹450 ₹4,500.00 18% ₹405.00 + ₹405.00
Steel kitchen utensil set 7323 4 × ₹1,250 ₹5,000.00 5% ₹125.00 + ₹125.00

Invoice total: ₹10,560.00.

Notes and edge cases

  • HSN digits: Rule 46 lets the government notify how many HSN digits each class of taxpayer must show; follow the notification that applies to your turnover.
  • Exports and supplies to SEZ need the endorsement in the Rule 46 proviso, which this simple layout does not add.
  • Discounts shown on the invoice reduce the taxable value; enter the net rate per unit here.
  • Recurring billing, a UPI QR and e-invoice upload files are what invoicing in MyRecords adds on top of this. Its GST tax invoice also prints the original, duplicate and triplicate copies.

Something else on your mind?

Ask us anything about modules, a quote or moving across. A person from our team replies.

Ask a question
01Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. The invoice is built in your browser. When you close the page, it is gone. Print or save it as PDF before you leave.

02Can I use this if my business must e-invoice?

Not on its own. If your turnover has crossed ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18, the invoice must carry the QR code with the IRN from the e-invoice portal. Check with the e-invoice applicability checker.

03What must the invoice number look like?

A consecutive serial number of up to 16 characters, in one or more series, using letters, digits, hyphen and slash, unique for the financial year (Rule 46(b)). KA/26-27/0142 is fine.

04When do I need the customer's state on the invoice?

For an unregistered customer, the name, address and delivery address with the state and its code are required when the taxable value is ₹50,000 or more, and on request below that (Rule 46(e) and (f)). For any inter-State supply, the place of supply with the state name is required (Rule 46(n)).

05How many copies do I need?

Rule 48 asks for the original marked "Original for recipient" and further copies for the transporter and supplier for goods. Print the copies you need and mark them.
