What it means
In everyday Indian business “godown” means the place stock sits. Under GST every place where you keep goods must be on your registration as the principal or an additional place of business; you add a new godown by amending the registration. Goods found at a godown not on the registration can be detained. A godown in another state needs its own GSTIN.
Example
Kaveri Agencies keeps stock in three places in Karnataka:
| Godown | On GST registration | Stock value |
|---|---|---|
| Mysuru main store | Principal place | ₹12,40,000 |
| Hunsur road godown | Additional place | ₹4,10,000 |
| Bengaluru branch | Additional place | ₹1,90,000 |
Moving 300 boxes from Mysuru to Bengaluru is a transfer within one GSTIN: no tax invoice, a delivery challan, and an e-way bill if the value is above ₹50,000.
Common mistakes
- Renting a new godown and starting to use it before amending the registration.
- Keeping one stock figure for the business instead of godown-wise stock.
- Moving stock between godowns with no document, so the count never matches.
In MyRecords
Each godown is a warehouse in a tree (stores, work in progress, finished goods, goods in transit), and every stock figure is per warehouse. Move stock transfers between them with a printed delivery challan, and Stock balance shows quantity and value for each one. A godown registered as an additional place of business carries its own address and GSTIN.
